The beginning of the school year is always filled with excitement, anticipation, and just a little bit of nerves. But if your child is starting out at a new school or it's his or her first year, they may be a little nervous about not having many friends to play with. Not to worry! You can help your child make new friends at school by working on a few simple lessons at home.

Encourage Smiles

A smile is the best way to show other people that your child is friendly and eager to be social. Help your child learn to smile when they first approach a classmate so that they create a welcoming presence.

Practice Introductions

Smiles are great, but conversation is better! At home, practice introducing yourself with your child and help them craft their own way to say “hello” to the other children at school. Simple phrases like “Hi, my name is Ryan. What’s yours?” and “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Sophia,” can help start a larger conversation with soon-to-be friends.

Emphasize Manners

“Politeness is an expensive way of making friends” and “manners matter” are statements that ring true for everyone — including children. Teaching your kids to use words like “please” and “thank you” and to not interrupt other classmates when speaking can make a world of difference in their effort to make friends.

Teach Good Conversation

Help your children understand that good conversation helps friendships grow and that they should ask questions to get to know their other classmates. “What do you do for fun?” “Do you have a favorite movie?” “What is your favorite food?” These are all questions that can help build bonds between your children and their new friends.
While this may happen year-after-year for your children, some children are anticipating their very first year at school — and there’s nothing more exciting than that! If you’re looking to prepare your child for the perfect morning routine, then here are some simple ways to do it:

Early Bedtimes

Unlike the summertime, your child won’t be able to sleep in late — since school starts bright and early in the morning. If you’re looking for the best way to help your child adjust to the time, then it’s best to set an early bedtime a few weeks before the first day of school. Not only will this make the adjustment much more comfortable for them, but they’ll wake up with ease on the big day!

Lay Everything Out

Sure, your child might want to pick out their outfit for school — but they might do that minutes before the bus arrives. To avoid chasing the bus each morning, it’s best to let your little one pick out their outfit the night before. This will not only eliminate any bus-running, but it will put them (and yourself) at ease, knowing that everything is okay and ready to go.

Once their outfit is picked out, you can then lay out their essentials in the bathroom. From their brushing essentials to their hair comb, this will help your little one greatly, while they become more independent. Of course, let them know that you’re always down the hall to assist whenever they may need it!

Create a List

One of the best ways to keep your child on track in the morning is to create a list of their morning schedule. From waking up and getting ready, to eating breakfast and waiting for the bus, this will help your little one put into perspective their school days and will definitely help them develop a routine. This will also be of great assistance, since it will prepare them for being on a schedule in the classroom, too!
Known to be one of the warmest seasons on Long Island, there are a variety of fun activities that your children can partake in — such as attending Miss Sue’s Summer Fun! However, once camp ends, there’s still some time to enjoy the summer before school starts. Not sure what to do? Here are some great tips!

Go on a Picnic

One of the best summer activities any family can enjoy is a picnic! Perfect for any environment, this will not only be a great way to catch up and gain some wonderful family time, but it’s the ideal way to feast on some delicious summer treats, too!

From the park to the local beach, there are a variety of great spots where you and your family can enjoy a lovely picnic! Of course, you’ll want to do this on a day where it’s not too hot, nor too cold. If it happens to rain on your designated picnic day, then you can always improvise by hosting it in your living room!

Your imagination will come in hand for this one! Simply lay a blanket on the floor of your living room, followed by placing bowls of snacks in the center. Not only will your children love this — but you can simply walk to your kitchen whenever you need to! It’s definitely a win-win situation!

Get Some Ice Cream

Another great way to spend some quality family time and enjoy the summer weather is to get some ice cream! Whether you visit your local ice cream parlor or get some from the frozen food aisle of the grocery store, there’s always a way to enjoy this incredible treat! Of course, if your little one is lactose intolerant, there are some dairy-free options to continue the fun!

If you’re looking to create the ultimate ice cream experience, then you can pick up a carton from the store, followed by some toppings, and you can then build your own ice cream parlor in the comfort of your home. Not only will your little ones love making their own sundaes, but they’ll always cherish this beautiful summer memory!

For most parents, this will be a breeze since many have older children who have gone through this process before — but what about those parents that are sending their child to their very first day of school? Remain calm, since their first day will be an absolute breeze with these tips:

Create a Schedule

One of the best ways to prepare your child for school is to create a schedule. From brushing their teeth to eating breakfast, this will help your little one get used to having a daily routine, which will be very beneficial for when they enter a classroom!

Here at Miss Sue’s, we provide our students with a daily schedule to follow, which will not only help them stay organized but will also help your little one develop a routine. Establishing a routine is one of the best skills any child can learn from, especially when they go to grade school; will carry on with them through the years!

Reassure your Child

Of course, if your child’s very first day of school is coming up, then it might seem a tad scary to them. Indeed, this is a natural feeling, and it’s important to reassure them. When your child attends Miss Sue’s, not only will they have a class filled with a group of fun, kind students their own age — but they’ll also make memories that will last a lifetime. It's important to always reassure your child that their experience it going to be incredible — especially at Miss Sue's!

For the past nine years (and counting), Miss Sue’s holds the title for the Best Nursery School on Long Island. We not only prepare our students for grade school, but we also teach the "essentials" through fun activities, games and more! When your child is a Miss Sue’s student, they’ll be receiving that Miss Sue’s advantage that we’ve taught since 1965!

Pair them with a Buddy

Does your child have a friend that’s attending Miss Sue’s for the very first time, too? If that’s the case, then you can let your child know that fact — and you’ll definitely see a rush of excitement in their face! It’s true: when a child is aware that they won’t be alone, they’ll definitely feel more secure and eager to go attend school.

Of course, when your child attends Miss Sue’s, they’ll be placed in a variety of group activities, where they’ll make even more friends. This will not only make your child’s school experience more enjoyable, but it will also give them friends that will last a lifetime, too!
Sometimes, serving a meal to a picky eater can seem like a challenge to some parents. From vegetables to pasta, any food can be ruled out by your child. Of course, it’s possible they’re afraid of trying what’s served to them, or they might not be a fan of the taste. Regardless, here are some ways to help your child overcome picky eating:

Make it Fun

One of the best ways to help a picky eater try a new food is to make their meals fun! Believe it or not, a presentation isn’t only an essential staple in upscale restaurants, but plays a huge part in childhood dining, too. Whether you’re making fish or vegetables, it’s vital to present the final product in a fun and exciting way!

Of course, you’ve been told from an early age not to play with your food — but when creating a presentation to your picky eater, you might have to! If the food is solid (i.e., chicken, beef, pork), then you can take a cookie cutter and use it to make shapes!

Now, if the food has a softer consistency (i.e., corn, spinach, mashed potatoes), then you can place them in fun-shaped serving cups/bowls. Once your child sees this presentation, they’ll be enamored by how fun their plate looks — and will undoubtedly feel inclined to try these new foods!

Dipping Sauce Helps

Sometimes, carrots might taste better with ketchup — to your child. Believe it or not, most children like the taste of vegetables and/or fish with some dipping sauce by their side. Not only will this hinder the flavor of the new food, on their end, but they’ll also feel more inclined to try anything that’s presented to them with the red staple by their side.

If you’re looking for the best way to go about this, then you can provide a dipping sauce of ketchup with your child’s meal. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative, then you can always opt for a condiment that has low-salt.

Next, when you serve your child their meal, you can place the ketchup on the plate (or on the side), which will give them the option to use ketchup to their discretion. Not only will this make any mealtime a bit simpler for you, but it will help your child try new foods — to which they usually wouldn’t try without ketchup!

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Parents: does your child have a nut allergy? Whether it be peanuts or almonds, to name a few, there are a variety of products that are created with nut-based products. Of course, this could be a potential risk to your child (and to those around them), so it’s best to always take precaution when making your child’s lunches. Looking to change up their menu? Here are a few ideas to check out:

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: large;">Create your own Snack Pack

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">One of the best meals to create for your little one is a snack pack. Of course, you could always purchase one of these ~famous~ lunches at your local grocery store — but it’s more fun (and personalized) when you make your own! To start, you’ll need the following:

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

Reusable plastic snack container with compartments

Crackers

Cheese

Pepperoni

Small cupcake wrappers

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Once you acquire these ingredients for your child’s snack pack, it’s then time to start building it! To start, you can fill the bottom of the bigger compartment with crackers. From there, you can take your small cupcake wrappers and place some slices of cheese and pepperoni in them. This will not only keep these ingredients from getting the crackers soggy, but it will keep your child’s lunch neat and organized!

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">After that step is complete, you can then add some addition nut-free snacks in the other compartments — and then you’ll have created the greatest snack pack on the planet!

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Another great nut-free lunch to make for your child are some miniature pizzas! Perfect for the kid that loves pizza parties, this will make their lunch not only tasty but fun, too! To start, you’ll want to purchase the following ingredients:

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

A package of tortillas

Shredded mozzarella cheese

A muffin pan

<span style="font-family: "arial";">After you acquire these essential ingredients, it’s then time to start the pizza making process! To start, you’ll want to take a preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Next, take a tortilla and cut small circles to fit into the cups of the muffin pan. From there, you’ll want to take a teaspoon of tomato sauce to place on top of each small pizza “dough.”

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Next, sprinkle a nice helping of cheese and then place the muffin pan in the oven for approximately 10-to-15 minutes. Once the time is up, let the mini pizzas cool down and then you’ll be good to go! Your child will certainly love this little pizza party that they’ll have for lunch!

With our incredible day camp program, your little one will be having a blast participating in a variety of phenomenal camp activities all week long — but what about over the weekend? Here are some fun outdoor activities to do on Saturdays and Sundays with your little campers, parents!

Start a Garden

One of the most timeless outdoor activities is to plant a garden with your little camper! Of course, the garden doesn’t have to be the size of a football field — but it can be as big or small as you’d like it. When it comes to gardening, the possibilities are endless (and quite fun, too)!

To start, you’ll want to gather the following items:

Sunscreen

A baseball hat

Sunglasses

Gardening gloves

Top soil

Seeds/Plants

Once you acquire these materials, you can then start the gardening process! Not only will your child develop a love for gardening — but they’ll have a blast watching it grow over time, too!

Go on a Nature Walk

Looking for a great way to enjoy the great outdoors this summer? Go for a nature walk with your little one! Of course, you’ll want to do this on a slightly cooler day, where the temperature isn’t above 80 degrees.

Not only will this be the perfect way to stay active, but your little camper will fall in love with observing nature and all that it has to offer! If you’re looking to take it up a notch, then you can even park some snacks, or lunch, and hold a little picnic, too!

Create a Waterpark

Another way to have fun on the weekend is to create a waterpark in your backyard! Just like creating a garden, a waterpark is a perfect opportunity to let your imagination run wild! Of course, your homemade aquatic park won’t have to replicate those that are on the Island — but it can come close!

To create a fantastic waterpark, gather these materials:

A sprinkler

Pool noodles

A portable pool

Small pool inflatables

When you obtain these items, it will then be time to set up your mini-waterpark! Before you set up the park, you’ll want to find a space that’s slightly shaded to keep the water cool. After you locate the perfect spot, place the pool in the center, followed by setting the sprinkler right next to it.

Next, you can take the pool noodles and small pool inflatables (i.e., beach ball) and place them around the pool — and you’ll be good to go! With parental supervision, this little waterpark will enamor your little one -- especially with how much fun it will be!

From selecting books to making time for a book, your little one might want to avoid the literary activity altogether. If you’re looking for a way to encourage summer reading, then here are a few fun tips to make it happen with ease!

Make it a Game

One of the best ways to motivate your child to read is to create a game! To start, you’ll want to pick a book that will be the perfect choice for their reading level.

From there, you can sit down with them and look at the book together — but there’s a catch: you’ll read a page, and then your child will have to read the next.

Your child will love this game since it will be quite fun to take turns reading a great book together!

Create Reading Time

Another way to encourage summer reading is to create a designated reading time for your child. Of course, they might not be sold on the idea, at first — but you can make it quite a fun time!

One of the best ways to do this is to create a comfortable reading area for your child. Whether you bring an excess amount of pillows or their favorite stuffed animals, the possibilities are endless for a reading nook!

Once this is created, you can factor about thirty minutes to an hour each day for your child to read!

Bring the Fun

Looking for a way to make your child’s summer reading a fun experience? Select a funny, comedy-based book for their age level — and your child will have a blast reading through it!

Sometimes it takes a laugh, or two, to make reading fun for any child — and a funny book will undoubtedly be the solution to making this work!

Outdoor Reading Area

In the spirit of summer, you can create an outdoor reading area for your little one, right in your backyard!

To start, you’ll want to find a cool, shaded area for them to read. Next, you can decorate the space with a tropical theme.

When doing this, you can include faux palm trees, a sandbox and even a beach umbrella, too! No matter what you choose, your little one will get into the summer reading spirit!
When that happens at Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, we give our campers some incredible arts and crafts to beat the heat! If you’re looking to escape the powerful UV rays at home, then here are some crafts that you can try with your little one in the spirit of summer!

Beautiful Butterflies
Love to hang your child’s artwork on the fridge? If that’s the case, then you’ll love these beautiful butterfly magnets! Simple to make, this craft will be as simple as a summer breeze! To start, you’ll need the following supplies:

A pack of multi-color construction paper

Clothespins

Magnets

Pipe Cleaners

Non-toxic glue

First and foremost, you’ll want to pre-cut the butterfly wings for your child out of construction paper. If you’re not sure that you’ll make the perfect wing shape, it’s okay: since many butterflies in nature have an abstract wing shape!

Next, lay out the supplies for your child to complete the craft. Make sure that they have at least one set of wings, a clothespin, the magnet, a pipe cleaner, and glue.

From there, you’ll want to instruct your child to place some glue on the back of the clothespin. Once that step is complete, tell them to put the clothespin in the middle of the wings. After that, ask them to take the pipe cleaner and feed it through the hole at the top of the clothespin.

Finally, have them glue the magnet to the back of the wings (right in the center) and let it dry for a few minutes. After the drying is complete, then you can place the butterfly on the fridge and watch it soar to new, magnetic heights!

Silly Shark
Lurking in the depths of the water swims the Silly Shark! This friendly lil’ guy will be the perfect addition to any summer crafting — and he’s very simple to make! Before you start this craft, parents, you’ll need to acquire these materials:

Blue construction paper

A white paper plate

Non-toxic glue stick

Googly eyes

Safety scissors

First, take the blue construction paper and cut it into a shark shape, as if the shark were standing on his fin! This will give your child enough room to glue the paper plate to the template, for the shark’s mouth!

Next, give your child the paper plate and instruct them to cut some teeth-like edges around the entire dish. Please make sure you supervise your child during this step since they will be using their safety scissors.

Once this step is complete, you can then instruct them to fold the plate in half to create the mouth of the Silly Shark. From there, your child will then take their non-toxic glue stick and only glue the back of one lower half of the plate (not the whole plate). After this is completed, they’ll want to paste it in the center of the shark cut-out to form the mouth!

Finally, it’s time to apply the googly eyes on the Silly Shark! Your child can then glue the eyes above the mouth and then the Silly Shark will be complete! You and your child will love this Silly Shark and how friendly he’ll look!

If you want to add some more flair to the Silly Shark, you can take some additional construction paper and cut out accessories for your shark to wear, such as a hat or suitcase!

At Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, we keep a close eye on our campers at all times, making sure that they’re protected from the sun and are hydrated all day long. If you’re looking for some ways to protect your child from the sun’s powerful rays, then here are some helpful tips to follow:

Hats are a Must

Looking for one of the best ways to protect your child from harmful UV rays? Invest in a fun summer hat! Of course, there is the possibility that your little one won’t want to wear this accessory — but it does host a series of benefits!

One of the most significant benefits of wearing a hat is that it protects your child’s scalp. Since sunscreen can’t be applied within the hair, a cap will provide full-coverage, putting you at ease, knowing that your child won’t sustain a potential scalp-burn. Finally, hats are an excellent way for you to spot your little one in the distance when supervising play!

Soak up the Sunscreen

Known to be the most helpful way to protect skin from the sun, sunscreen will help prevent burns from happening. One of the best tips to understand is that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that parents should use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15, UVA and UVB on their child.

When applying sunscreen, the CDCP also states that you should generously apply it at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. This will not only help protect your child’s skin more effectively, but it will also let the sunscreen absorb into the skin, creating the protective barrier that’s needed.

Additionally, the CDCP also states that you should apply sunscreen to your child’s nose, tops of their feet, ears, and lips since these areas are usually prone to be forgotten (and burn quite quickly).

Always Look for Shade

Here at Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, we know that the summer sun can be more powerful over time. While supervising our campers, we’ll take them to a shaded area (or indoors) when the rays are too intense. This will not only help prevent burns, but it will also keep your child cool and comfortable.

If you plan on going to the beach this summer or have a picnic in the park, then it’s essential to bring some shade with you. The most helpful of items? An umbrella, of course! If you’re looking to provide even more shade, then it may be wise to invest in a canopy tent, which will provide the perfect protection from the sun!

When you choose Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, you can rest assured knowing that your child is safely having fun in the sun, while also building the knowledge, skills, and confidence to have a successful future. From the Grand Canyon to the Walt Disney World, the possibilities are endless when it comes to spending time with your family and making memories! One of the most critical aspects of any vacation or trip to the local pool? A summer bag, filled with essentials! Parents, here’s what you’ll need:

Sunscreen

Looking for the staple of all summer bags? A bottle of sunscreen. Of course, this goes without saying, but sometimes the sun can play tricks on you, shining a UV index much higher than what was stated on the morning weather forecast.

If you’re looking for the best solution, then it would be best to invest in sport coverage sunscreen. Not only will this protect your child from the harsh rays, but it will stay put on their skin if they begin to swim.

You can purchase a sport coverage sunscreen at any local convenience store in either a lotion or spray-on.

Snacks

Another essential for any summer bag are snacks. Coming in a variety of sizes, usually, any full-sized version of your child’s full-sized snack can be found in a travel size. One of the best bets is to find snack pack versions to bring with you on the go.

Not only will bringing snacks help in those hungry situations, but you’ll feel much better when you know you have something to “munch” on for your child -- especially on those long car rides to your destination.

First-Aid Kit

Not sure what you’ll need next? Well, that’s simple: a first-aid kid. Of course, you won’t want to carry around the large version of this staple, but it will undoubtedly come in handy if you or your child sustains an injury while out and about.

From bandages to a triple antibiotic ointment, you can create your kit with a clean cosmetics pouch. This will not only bring safety with you on the go, but it will also be one of the best investments this summer -- and all year round, too!

Water

Of course, you won’t be able to carry a pitcher or gallon around, but water is an absolute must! When the temperatures begin to rise, so does the risk of possible dehydration. One of the best ways to bring water with you is to find snack-pack versions of it! Not only will these be small enough to fit in your bag, but they’ll be perfect for when your child needs a drink of water!
Here at Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, we understand this and do everything to keep our campers cool and comfortable. If you’re looking for ways to keep your camper cool at home, then here are some great tips to know:

Indoors Aren’t off Limits

When the temperature becomes quite hot, it’s important to weigh out the odds and bring your child indoors. Believe it or not, as enjoyable as it is to play outdoors during the summer, playing in sweltering weather could lead to sunburns and dehydration, just to name a few instances.

If you’re looking for the perfect solution, then it’s best to bring the activities indoors. From arts and crafts to board games, the possibilities are entirely endless (and fun)!

If you’re not sold on this idea, then you can search for other indoor activities in your area, such as an arcade, laser tag and so much more!

Go for a Swim

Looking for a way to keep your child cool? If that’s the case, then it’s important to take a trip to the pool! Whether this aquatic feature is in your backyard or down the block, it’s the best way to keep your little one cool and comfortable.

At Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, in addition to sports crafting and more, we offer a large variety of water activities! From swimming to windsurfing, your child will stay cool all summer long, while having fun!

Additionally, besides keeping cool, swimming also hosts a variety of other benefits that will help your child, such as exercise!

Create a Cool Atmosphere

Still looking for a way to cool your little ones down? One of the best ways to do this (besides using an air conditioner) is to use a fan and a cool, damp sheet! To start, take a standard fan and place it in the corner of the room. Next, take a thin, cotton sheet and place it in some water.

Once you have wet the sheet, you’ll want to remove the excess water from it (wring out the sheet). After this step is complete, you can then hang the sheet up in front of the fan to create an energy saving air conditioner. Not only will this keep your child cool, but they’ll be amazed at how this works!

<span style="font-family: "arial";">When your child learns the art of swimming, they’ll soon find this to be an excellent source of exercise! Whether you’re a child or an adult, swimming can help strengthen muscles, corrects posture and even has heart benefits, too.
Not only will your child love to swim, but they’ll be taking advantage of these hidden benefits when doing so! It’s the perfect summer activity and life skill to pick up! Your child will be so proud when they can swim in any water they enter!

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #434343; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">New Form of Play

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Another great benefit of swimming is that it will give your child a new form of play. Whether they’re swimming laps with friends or playing a game of Marco Polo, the possibilities are endless when it comes to this aquatic hobby.
At Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, not only do we offer swimming lessons, but we also Pool parties, water sports, a water slide, “water skiing,” windsurfing, paddle boats, rafts and more! Your child will undoubtedly be more inclined to take up swimming as a new hobby, for sure!

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #434343; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Preparation for Safety

<span style="font-family: "arial";">One of the most important benefits of learning how to swim is that it will prepare your child for water safety. People between the ages of 5 and 24, as stated by KidsHealth.org, are prone to drowning-related incidents.
At Miss Sue’s Summer Fun, our pools are supervised by Nassau County certified/WSI lifeguards, while our instructors teach campers everything about the art of swimming. Not only will your child grasp the concept quickly, but their confidence will grow as the summer progresses!

Children often learn some vital skills through play and having cooperative play can be crucial in their long-term development.

You may notice early on that your child likes to play alone, but the more you encourage cooperative play, the more they will be able to learn from the activities in which they participate. When your child attends Miss Sue's Summer Fun, they will continue to develop their cooperative play skills, quickly, by being around other children their age!

Strengthening Decision-Making Skills

Whether your child is playing sports, a non-competitive color war, or putting together an arts and crafts project, working with others can help improve their decision-making and social skills. At Miss Sue's Summer Fun, they’ll work together and provide each other with the best options to reach their goals!

Nurturing Cooperative Behavior

Learning how to work and play with others is essential for any child. It builds on a robust attitude and kindness in your child, allowing them to work well in team settings ultimately. They will appreciate the help of others and often choose that route rather than working alone on things.

Building Communication Abilities

Typically, at younger ages, children are hesitant to communicate because they’re not used to being in various situations. The more you encourage cooperative play, the more often they’ll be around other children and communication will become more comfortable.

Your child will go through six stages of play, including unoccupied play, solitary play, onlooker play, parallel play, associate play, and cooperative play. You don’t want to push your child towards cooperative play until he or she is ready. However, once it’s possible, cooperative play can be a great developmental tool!
