Ways To Encourage Literacy Development At Home

Not every child will be a book worm. Nonetheless, there are other ways to encourage literacy development at home. Below are some helpful tips and tricks that parents can try out.
  • Put books in bin on the floor. That way,  books will be accessible to your child at all times. If your child does have the urge to read, a good book will always be within arm's reach.
  • Read a book aloud with your child as an after school ritual. Learning will continue after the school day!
  • Ask your child to say different letters or sound out longer words. This will help them with letter recognition and pronunciation skills.
  • Find out if your local library holds free song and story hours.
  • Talk to your child about topics that interest them. In doing so, you can introduce them to new vocabulary words they may not be familiar with.
  • Teach your child different nursery rhymes. Reciting the nursery rhymes with your child could be just what you need to lull them to sleep.
Most of all, show your child that reading can be fun! At Miss Sue's, our learning centers emphasize individual growth through language arts. Every day our children are involved with interactive language experiences. Please call us for an appointment or with any questions at 516-938-0894.

How Children Can Make The Most of Playtime

Childhood doesn't last forever. In that sense, neither does playtime. It is important for children to have a designated playtime. After all, it will aid in their development. Below are some tips that can help your child make the most of their playtime.

Decisions, Decisions
Children are usually told what to do by adults. However, this is not the case during playtime! When a child starts to play with toys, they will have the freedom to make their own decisions.

Playtime is Spur-of-the-Moment
Clearly, playtime is not scripted. Children improvise during playtime. If a toy does not work as it should, they can come up for another use for it. In the end, playtime teaches children how to be resourceful and flexible.

Playing is Learning
Some people think nothing of child's play. However, they couldn't be more wrong! Playing is actually learning. When children are interacting with other objects, or other people, they are simply learning about the world around them.

We believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning that is provided through play. Playing with other children will also help them develop social skills.  Are you looking for a superior nursery school on Long Island? Look no further than Miss Sue's Nursery School! How Art Inspires Children To Be Creative

Exposing children to art at an early age is extremely important--as it can spark the imagination. Below are some tips you can implement at home to spark your child's creativity through art.

Things Might Get Messy
It isn't likely that you child will always color within the lines. With that said, it is important to anticipate that your child might make a mess. Make sure your child has a designated area to create art. Lay down old newspapers or a drop cloth to be on the safe side.

Do Not Tell Them What To Create
Avoid telling your child what he or she should make. Instead, let your child's imagination take over! That way, your child has complete control and artistic freedom.

Ask Questions
To show your child that you are interested in what they are making, ask them meaningful questions. For example, ask them why they chose certain colors and what the piece of art means to them.

At Miss Sue's, we encourage children to express themselves through art on a daily basis. We understand how important it is to have a creative outlet. Are you looking for a nursery school that will foster your child's creativity? If so, look no further than Miss Sue's! Call 516-938-0894 to inquire about enrollment.

The Curriculum at Miss Sue's Nursery School

Have you ever heard the expression that children soak information up like a sponge? Well, they do! Studies show that children learn the most information in the first 4 years. That's why choosing a good nursery school is so important. Below is a breakdown of the curriculum at Miss Sue's.

Math
We introduce children to the wonderful world of math. We concentrate on the concepts of numbers, shapes, patterns and measurements. In addition (no pun intended), we teach them how to count and sequence numbers.

Science
We also teach children science concepts. Topics such as predictions, weather, colors, time, nature and experiments are covered in our curriculum.

Language & Literacy
It is imperative for all children to expand their vocabularies. In addition to exposing them to new words, we teach them about rhyme, rhythm and letter recognition.

At Miss Sue’s Nursery School, our prime educational goal is the development of the whole child — socially, emotionally, physically and educationally. A multi-sensory, wholistic approach to learning is provided through play, art, music and physical activities. Please call us for an appointment or with any questions (24 hours/7 days a week) at 516-938-0894.

How To Keep Kids Physically Active In The Wintertime

It finally feels like winter here on Long Island. Now that the cold was swept in, your child may spend less and less time in the great outdoors. This could also make your child lead a more sedentary lifestyle. Below are some tips that will help your child stay physically active this season.

Interactive Video Games
Traditional video games do not promote exercise. However, that is not the case today! Interactive video games can get your kids moving or grooving. Children can virtually play sports like tennis or baseball from the comfort of home. Other video games teach kids how to dance and bust a move!

Indoor Playgrounds
On a cold winter's day, going to a playground in your town is simply not an option. That's why there are indoor playgrounds. It gives your child the chance to run around, play, climb and explore. Do some research on indoor playgrounds in your area. The local mall might provide a small indoor obstacle course.

Indoor Sports
It is important to keep in mind that not all sports are played outdoors. There are plenty of sports that can be played inside. Try your hand at indoor roller skating!

We hope that the tips above help your child stay physically active this season. At Miss Sue’s Nursery School, our prime educational goal is the development of the whole child — physically, socially, emotionally, and educationally.
