Signs Your Child Is Ready for Kindergarten

A lot of parents are unsure of what age to put their child in kindergarten. It is important to remember that the every child is different. Instead of focusing on their age, assess whether or not your child is ready for kindergarten. Below are some indications that your child is prepared.
  • Potty Trained- Children who are entering kindergarten should be potty trained. That way, children will be able to use the bathroom on their own.
  • Language Skills- It is not necessary for children to know every letter of the alphabet. However, they should be able to recognize a majority of letters.
  • Social Skills- Does your child play well with others? If so, it will only make the transition from nursery school to kindergarten even smoother.
  • Motor Skills- Can your child throw a ball or hold a pencil correctly? These are both signs that your child has the motor skills needed to excel in kindergarten.
Our kindergarten program is an extension of our nursery school philosophy. Children continue to work at their own levels in learning centers. More challenging reading and math readiness skills are presented through language experience activities and child-centered investigations. Are you interested in enrolling your child at Miss Sue's? Keep Your Child Learning this Summer

Some children are under the impression that school is the only place they will learn new things. Quite the contrary! Children can learn so much from exploring the world around them. Below are some tips that will help your child learn new things all summer long.

Encourage Your Child To Write
Did you go on a fun vacation this summer? Did you visit family in another part of the country? Whatever your child did this summer, encourage them to write about it! If your child takes to writing, encourage them to keep a journal.

Go To The Museum
A lot of children enjoy going to the museum. Little do they know that it is also a great opportunity to learn new things!

Read Before Bed
Even though school is not in session, your child should still curl up with a good book. Reading a bedtime story with your little one can strengthen your relationship and prepare them for a lifetime of academic excellence.

We hope that the tips above help your child learn new things this summer. Once the summer is over, your child may be eligible for nursery school. Looking for a superior nursery school on Long Island? How To Protect Your Child From The Sun

When the weather is nice, many Long Islanders head to the beach. Whenever you are spending time outdoors, it is important to be mindful that the sun is always shining on you. Below are some tips to keep your child protected from the sun.

Wear Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen is a must. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is best to put a broad spectrum sunscreen on your child. Remember to reapply it every 30 minutes.

Find a Shady Spot
If your child has very sensitive skin, it is always a good idea to seek shade whenever possible. Wearing a hat or spending time under a beach umbrella will protect your child from the sun.

See the World through Sunglasses
Don't forget about protecting their eyes! The American Optometric Association suggests wearing sunglasses that block out UVA and UVB radiation.

We hope that tips above help your child stay safe while having fun in the sun. Once the summer is over, your child may be eligible for nursery school. Encourage Your Child To Read this Summer

School is out for summer! However, that is no excuse to stop reading. Below are some tips that will keep your child reading all summer long.

Do Your Homework
Is your child stumped on what book they'd like to read? Do some research to find a new book your child will enjoy. After all, they are more likely to read if the book appeals to them.

Make Reading A Priority
Set aside a specific time of day when your child should read. Not only will this allow your child to read every day, it will show them that reading is a priority.

Check Out The Public Library
Reading doesn't have to be an expensive activity. After all, the local library has books you can read for free! Make sure you get your child a library card. In addition, libraries often host free events for children.

Most of all, show your child that reading can be fun! At Miss Sue's, our learning centers emphasize individual growth through language arts. Every day our children are involved with interactive language experiences. Please call us for an appointment or with any questions at 516-938-0894.

What You Need To Know About Playtime

Some people think nothing of child's play. However, children aren't just playing around--they are learning, too. Below are some key points to know about playtime.

Playtime can:
  • reduce the amount of stress a child experiences
  • keep kids strong and healthy
  • help a child grow emotionally
  • strengthen cognitive skills
  • improve muscular coordination
  • decrease the risk of obesity in children
  • fine tune motor skills
  • increase a child's vocabulary
  • let children connect with nature
  • help children socialize with others
  • allow children to learn about the world around them

Playtime is necessary for children because they are playful by nature. We believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning that is provided through play. Playing with other children will also help them develop social skills. Are you looking for a nursery school on Long Island? Look no further than Miss Sue's Nursery School!
